Notes
Catcher's don't often get 450 trips to the plate, but Tadi has done it every year since 2008. As you can imagine, the runs and RBIs pile up with extra playing time, and it certainly helps that he increases your team's batting average and may add another 20 homers this season.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
After batting .323 across three minor league levels in 2017, Jansen hit .275 with 12 homers and five steals through 88 games in AAA in 2018 before earning an August call-up to the Blue Jays. He hit .247 with three homers over 31 games in Toronto, and it's reasonable to expect him to maintain a similar pace over his first full Big League season with the potential for more. Given the sorry state of the catcher position, it could make sense to take a chance on Jansen's unknown upside once the seven or eight surefire starters at the position are off the board.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Old man Molina keeps getting the job done. After blasting 19 combined homers from 2014 to 2016, he has belted 18 and 20 homers in the past two season, respectively. He set a career high in hard-hit rate (44.4%) but posted his lowest batting average (.261) since 2006 with no major contact losses. If the 36-year-old can hold up one more year, he should trade some power for contact and hit around .270 with 15 homers. That essentially makes him Mike Piazza compared to the catchers available to those who punt the position.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
While far from a sure thing, Jansen is easily the best option for drafters who miss out on the top-eight catchers. He held his own (.247/.347/.432) during 31 late games with the Blue Jays after posting a 146 wRC+ with only five more strikeouts (49) than walks in Triple-A. He even stole five bases before his big league promotion, and simply repeating that tally would represent a major boost at the bleak position. He has the plate approach to hit for a higher average with decent power, and the Blue Jays should give him the neophyte regular reps after shipping Russell Martin back to the Dodgers. The only concern is a lack of catching depth forcing drafters to reach for Jansen once the likes of Willson Contreras, Buster Posey, and Yadier Molina fall off the board.
Andrew Gould - FantasyPros
It may surprise you to learn that Molina has finished as a top-three catcher in standard 5x5 roto leagues in back-to-back seasons and a top-five catcher in three straight seasons. Clearly, his mid-30s have agreed with him so far, but he does carry a little bit of risk this year as he recovers from offseason knee surgery. Durability has been Molina's calling card throughout his career, so if he's able to remain on the field there is a good chance he will again outperform some of the bigger names who are sure to go ahead of him in fantasy drafts.
Andrew Seifter - FantasyPros
Now that Martin was dealt to the Dodgers, Jansen is the favorite to start at catcher for the Blue Jays. He doesn't have much power, but his average will be quality and he should play enough that the RBIs and runs will make him a fringe top 12 fantasy catcher.
Bobby Sylvester - FantasyPros
