Notes
There's a reason that you hear fantasy analysts say that you should target post-hype players: baseball is hard, man, and it takes time for players to fully figure it out. With his prospect pedigree, it took longer than most thought for Lucas Giolito to figure things out. But boy did he ever in 2019, with his 25-start dominating stretch to end the season. He looked like a totally different pitcher - but one who mowed down the league. Hitters are more often to click sooner than pitchers are in the big leagues, and if you look at his peripherals, there's not much to question about Giolito's breakout performance. As long as he keeps his increased velocity on his fastball, he'll continue to be a solid SP2 for fantasy managers.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
One of these years, it's going to happen. Zack Greinke is going to get rocked as his velocity continues to decline. There's little upside here, with more downside that the end is here at age 36. Greinke has been the model of consistency, but at a position where strikeouts are the most valuable result that a pitcher can give you, Greinke doesn't help you at all. If you're looking at pure volume in a short season, he's worth the pick here.
Michael Waterloo - FantasyPros
Giolito earned every bit of his breakout season, putting up an ERA that we nearly identical to his FIP and xFIP and a major gain in control. Most impressive for Giolito was his ability to limit contact on pitches in the strike zone - just 77.3%, second best in MLB behind Gerrit Cole. His raw stuff is elite, and another fantastic season should follow in 2020.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
Greinke didn't see the patented Astros bump after a mid-season trade, as his overall numbers actually declined a bit after his move from the Diamondbacks. His ERA and WHIP remain outstanding, but his strikeout rate continues to decline, such that it now actively does not help fantasy owners. Still, he's nearly a lock for 200 innings, plenty of wins, and solid peripherals, making him a fine addition to any fantasy staff. But with his advancing age, don't bank on him necessarily being a top-20 pitcher.
Dan Harris - FantasyPros
2019 breakout can be attributed to an uptick in velocity and an improved changeup. Can he do it again?
Brendan Tuma - BettingPros
Has become a boring pick but there's plenty of upside in his first full season with the Astros. A lot of potential for wins, which are often overlooked when analyzing SPs
