Brett Gardner to remain a Yankee for the foreseeable future

by Andrew Sullivan | Wed, Jan 11th 5:45pm EST

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said it is unlikely that Brett Gardner will be traded before Opening Day. (Bryan Hoch on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

While Cashman said the chances of flipping Gardner before the start of the 2017 season are slim, this does not rule out the possibility of a trade midseason for the left fielder who is owed $23 million over the next two years plus a $12.5 million club option in 2019. A potential departure from the Bronx should not dampen Gardner's fantasy value too much, as his value is mainly predicated on his ability to get on base (.351 OBP in 2016), swipe bases and score runs rather than power. He has always shown patience at the dish with a career Swing%/O-Swing%/SwStr% of 36%/22.6%/4.7%. Gardner failed to steal at least 20 bags this past season (16), however, for the first time since 2012. Rumors have been swirling around that either Gardner or teammate Jacoby Ellsbury will be removed from the top of the lineup. If Gardner's spot in the lineup were to be lowered, his run scoring opportunities would be diminished.
