Victor Martinez working back from surgery

Tigers GM Al Avila announced that Victor Martinez had surgery on a hernia in October. Martinez should be good to go for the beginning of the 2017 season, but could be held out of some preseason work to continue rehab. He had an .824 OPS in 2016. (Anthony Fenech on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

Martinez had a .667 OPS in 2015 after finishing as the runner-up in the AL MVP race in 2014, so his .824 OPS and 27 home runs last season provided a nice bounce back. While he is not particularly known for his power, he does have a .464 slugging percentage since missing the 2012 season with an ACL tear, averaging 24 home runs per 162 games. Since he is now solely a DH, his C/1B eligibility is not a strength, but his track record of power and contact makes him a good utility option in the middle of your draft.
