The Cardinals have announced that SP Carlos Martinez will get the ball on April 2nd against the Cubs to open the 2017 season. (Jenifer Langosch on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

This may be of little surprise to those who have followed the development of Martinez into the ace of the Cardinals' pitching staff. Adam Wainwright, who has started the Cardinals' previous four openers, will follow Martinez on April 4th for the second game of the season. Martinez is just returning from representing the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. Over eight innings in the tournament, Martinez allowed one earned run over six hits and three walks to go with eight strikeouts. The Cards' ace looks to improve upon an impressive 2016 campaign in which he won 16 games with a 3.04 ERA over 195.1 innings. Look for Martinez to finish in the top 20 SP for 2017, with the upside to crack the top 10-15.
