Peralta to open season as starting 3B for Cardinals

by Josh Loesche | Mon, Mar 27th 12:57pm EDT

Cardinals' manager Mike Matheny has indicated that infielder Jhonny Peralta will begin 2017 as the starting 3B. Going into Spring Training, third base was open for competition with Jedd Gyorko receiving consideration for the role as well. (Jenifer Langosch on MLB.com)

Fantasy Impact:

Peralta seems to have finally recovered from the thumb injury that plagued him for much of the 2016 season. While he has not torn the cover off the ball in Grapefruit League play, he has posted an encouraging 7 extra base hits across 38 AB entering Friday. If Peralta can recover some of his lost power, he could be a cheap source of production at 3B/SS for fantasy managers looking for a waiver wire grab at the beginning of the season. Alternatively, if Peralta struggles to produce, look for utility infielders Greg Garcia and Jedd Gyorko to strip away playing time.
