Brandon Maurer closes Saturday's nightmare in Petco

by Joshua Wattay | Sun, May 21st 11:40am EDT

Brandon Maurer pitched one inning allowing one hit, one earned-run, and two walks during Saturday's 9-1 defeat to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Maurer also retired two batters by way of strikeout.

Fantasy Impact:

Maurer would take the mound from teammate Jose Torres in the top of the ninth inning with San Diego trailing Arizona 8-0. Jake Lamb would face Maurer first, and Maurer would walk Lamb with four straight four-seam fastballs. Maurer was not intentionally trying to walk Lamb, but rather could not get a called strike for one reason or another. The next two Arizona hitters were retired by Maurer and company; however, Chris Herrmann doubled to right field and advanced Lamb to third. Maurer would then do the unthinkable with Rey Fuentes at-bat on a 1-and-2 count with two outs. Throwing a wild pitch, Maurer allowed Jake Lamb to score effortlessly from third, coming full circle from walking Lamb to watching him trot home. It has been a horrific month for the 26-year-old closer, with a staggering 13.50 earned-run-average in May. Maurer has the ability to right the ship, but is not playing up to his namesake at this point in the season. Fantasy Owners should proceed with caution and consider other options until Maurer gets this "slump" figured out.
