Fernando Rodney blows save and takes loss

by Waleed Hawatky | Fri, Jul 7th 2:37pm EDT

Fernando Rodney gave up four runs without retiring a single batter, blowing the save as the Diamondbacks lost 5-4 to the Dodgers.

Fantasy Impact:

Yikes; we already knew that Rodney was a volatile and often implosive closer but he'd brought his ERA down from an astronomical 12.60 on April 29th to a still-hideous-but-much-better 4.30 having not given up a run (or blown a save) since, logging 15 saves in that span. After giving up a run in his last appearance, he followed up with this clunker where, upon entering with a 4-1 lead, he immediately surrendered a two-pitch single to Yasiel Puig, a four-pitch walk to Joc Pederson, a five-pitch walk to Cody Bellinger, walked in a run with a four-pitch walk to Logan Forsythe, a two-run single to Corey Seager, and an intentional walk to Justin Turner to load them up again before leaving with the game now tied at four runs apiece. Reliever T.J. McFarland would then give up a first pitch single for the walk-off and that was all she wrote. Rodney closes for one of the best teams in baseball so the saves will keep coming but it's hard for owners to sit through a 5.64 ERA and 1.35 WHIP.
