Sean Newcomb earns quality start Sunday

by Steve Painter | Athletics Correspondent | Mon, Jul 24th 12:01am EDT

Sean Newcomb pitched six innings against the Dodgers Sunday, allowing three hits, three runs (all earned), and five walks while recording nine strikeouts in a solid effort despite the five free passes. Two of those walks preceded a three-run homer off the bat of Austin Barnes giving the Dodgers a 3-1 lead in the fourth. Newcomb didn't factor into the decision, a 5-4 loss compliments of a walk-off single from Logan Forsythe in the 10th inning but he did earn a quality start for his effort. Newcomb will pitch again on Saturday against Jerad Eickhoff and the Phillies in Philadelphia.

Fantasy Impact:

The big negative on Newcomb is his command, which is fairly important, the question is, will he improve? And the answer is probably not. So that limits his upside but not to the point where he holds little value. His value is still pretty solid, and he belongs in rotations of 12-team (or higher) leagues.
