Addison Reed picks up his 17th save in gut-wrenching fashion

by Nick Ritrivi | Tue, Jul 25th 11:41am EDT

Addison Reed closed out the Mets' 5-3 win over the Padres on Monday night, but not before giving the Mets and their fans a huge scare in the process. Called on to preserve a 5-2 lead in the ninth inning, Reed entered the game and promptly allowed a lead-off home run to Hunter Renfroe. After allowing two of the next three batters to reach base, Jabari Blash hit what appeared to be a three-run walk-off home run to win the game for the Padres. The ball, however, sailed barely foul - a call which was upheld on video review. Reed rallied to strike out Blash and subsequently retired Matt Szczur for the final out of the game.

Fantasy Impact:

Reed has been quite effective as the fill-in closer for Jeurys Familia this season. He now has 17 saves on the season to go with a 2.49 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP and 48 Ks in 47 IP. While he has been a valuable fantasy asset in leagues that reward saves, his usefulness may be coming to an end if he is dealt by the Mets to a contending team that already has an established closer. All signs point to Reed being dealt before the July 31 trade deadline, so owners should be ready to obtain saves from another source if Reed returns to a set-up role. He would, however, retain his fantasy value in those leagues that reward holds. Stay tuned.
