Austin Slater to be examined Wednesday

Giants outfielder Austin Slater, whose rookie season has been disrupted by a pair of injuries, will be examined Wednesday to evaluate whether he has sustained a sports hernia.

Slater will travel to Philadelphia for the appointment with Dr. William C. Meyers, an expert in core muscle injuries. The term "sports hernia" has come to refer to any tear or strain in the lower abdomen or groin. Slater, 24, missed 52 games with a strained right groin that he sustained July 7. At the time, Slater was batting .290 in 29 games. He resumed playing for the Giants on Sept. 6 after a whirlwind rehabilitation, but played just five games before being diagnosed with a right groin strain. Overall, Slater has compiled a slash line of .282/.339/.402 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 34 games. He had planned to play winter ball in the first half of the Dominican league's season.
