Avila is joining a team that lacks a full time starting catcher, increasing his value from his days with the Cubs. Last season, between 2 teams, Avila was able to bat .264 with 14 home runs and 90 combined runs and RBIs. It is still likely that he will split time with right-hand hitting Jeff Mathis due to his career .212 average against southpaws.
