Kevin Kiermaier (hand) to miss 8-12 weeks after surgery

Kevin Kiermaier will undergo surgery on a torn ligament in his right thumb and will likely miss 8-12 weeks. Kiermaier tore the ligament Sunday sliding headfirst into second base. (Tampa Bay Times)

Fantasy Impact:

For the third straight season, Kiermaier will miss a significant portion of the season. Carlos Gomez, a career center fielder before joining the Rays, could shift over to center, while Mallex Smith could also make the move over. Regardless, Smith, Denard Span, and Rob Refsnyder should all see more playing time, along with the rookie Johnny Field, who made his major league debut on Saturday and replaced Kiermaier Sunday when he got hurt.
