Marlins bring home Mat Latos

by Jeff Rosenberg | Sun, Dec 14th 12:17pm EST

Continuing their scale-up from 2014 to 2015, the Miami Marlins agreed to terms with the Cincinnati Reds on a trade that sends RHP Anthony DeScalfani and C Chad Wallach to Cincinnati in exchange for SP Mat Latos. Latos, a South Florida native who attended Coconut Creek High School and Broward Community College before being drafted by the San Diego Padres, enters his final season of arbitration and could be a free agent at the end of the 2015 season. Fantasy Impact:

With Jose Fernandez likely to miss most of the first half of the season Latos is a shoe-in to start the year as Miami's ace. Latos missed the first half of 2014 with issues in his right elbow, but finished the season going 5-5 with a 3.25 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 74 Ks in 102.1 IP over 16 starts. A full offseason of rest coupled with a switch from the hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark to the spacious Marlins Stadium bodes well for an improved year for Latos. Latos projects as a Top 25 SP in 2015.
