Jose Martinez's name prominent in trade talks with Rays

After the Cardinals made the biggest splash of the offseason so far landing All-Star slugger Paul Goldschmidt, it appears the team isn't done dealing quite yet. Adding the power-hitting first baseman all but eliminates the need for Jose Martinez, which is why the team has already been in trade talks with other teams around the league. The team who has seems to be the most in on Martinez -- and were also trying to trade for Goldschmidt -- is Tampa Bay. (Tim McKernan on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

A bit of a late bloomer, the 30-year-old Martinez finally got his shot in the bigs in 2018, posting a .305/.364/.457 line with 17 HR and 83 RBI. His emergence was a bit of an eyebrow-raiser for fantasy owners, being so far along in his baseball career without cracking the league. Being a staple in the middle of the Cardinals' order certainly aided in his counting stats, but a move to Tampa -- which would include being placed in a worse offense, and a much worse park -- could make Martinez off limits in fantasy in all but extremely deep leagues.
