Although he’s considered a longshot, Chris Paddack will be given every opportunity to lock down a spot in the Padres rotation. (AJ Cassavell on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

San Diego’s starting rotation is far from being set in stone to this point. That gives the 23-year-old righty Paddack a legitimate shot at making the cut. The 34th overall prospect (MLB Pipeline) didn’t pitch at all in 2017 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. In 90 innings last season, Paddack pitched to a 2.10 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP with a 120/8 strikeout to walk ratio. Those numbers are clearly impressive but the potential workload could be a fantasy concern. The Padres are sure keep an eye on his innings, but the quality of his repertoire and lack of stiff competition makes Paddack an intriguing late-round flyer.
