Carlos Martinez removed from throwing program due to shoulder weakness

Carlos Martinez has been removed from the Cardinals' throwing program for two weeks to focus on strengthening his right shoulder. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

The good news is that an MRI revealed no additional structural damage for Martinez. That is where the good news ends. Although the Cardinals planned to move him back to the rotation, his lingering weakness in his shoulder suggests that he will be unable to handle the role. Even if he could, he'll be behind his normal throwing routine, and it is unclear if he'd have enough time to get ready for the start of the season. Martinez may be moved to the bullpen, and could even be the closer, depending on how the next few weeks go.
