Mitch Moreland lands back on the IL with a quad injury

by Mike Maher | Sat, Jun 8th 11:52am EDT

Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland was placed on the 10-day injured list with a quad injury on Saturday after leaving Friday night's game against the Rays with quad tightness. Infielder Marco Hernandez was recalled from Pawtucket to take Moreland's place on the roster. Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo added on Twitter that the "Moreland injury could be at least semi-serious. He’s meeting with doctors and undergoing tests today. Cora doesn’t think quad is torn, but this could be an extended absence." (Chris Cotillo on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

Friday was Moreland's first game back from the injured list after dealing with a back injury, and he was not even able to make it through his first game before leaving with a new injury. Cotillo's report on Twitter seems to indicate that this could be a significant injury, rather than just tightness that would result in the minimum stay on the 10-day injured list. Michael Chavis will likely handle the bulk of the first base duties in Moreland's absence.
