Carlos Martinez picks up win in relief Sunday

by Connor Rooney | Mon, Jul 1st 10:39am EDT

Carlos Martinez (2-0) scooped up a relief win on Sunday, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing one hit, one walk, and striking out four.

Fantasy Impact:

Martinez's role is still somewhat undefined, but he's been deployed in high-leverage situations later in games, often times stretching beyond one inning. The Cardinals aren't ruling out a return to the starting rotation in 2020 for Martinez, so they may be trying to stretch him out in relief appearances for the rest of the season. All signs point to Martinez assuming the closer's role now that Jordan Hicks is out for the year and John Gant has been ineffective lately. He tossed 2.2 dominant innings in a tie game Sunday, and picked up the win in relief after the Cardinals took the lead. Martinez was solid in June, only allowing two earned runs in 11.2 innings. Due to his longevity in the role and his solid peripherals, Martinez is an immediate fantasy-add if you need saves.
