Edwin Diaz out as closer in New York?

by Mike Maher | Mets Correspondent | Sun, Aug 4th 12:25pm EDT

Mets reliever Edwin Diaz allowed two runs in New York's win over the Pirates on Saturday, his fourth consecutive appearance in which he has allowed at least one run. Mets manager Mickey Callaway was asked about Diaz and the closer situation after the game and said, “We have to be open-minded...We can’t lock ourselves into one thing,” according to Tim Healey on Twitter. Fantasy Impact:

Diaz now has a 5.44 ERA through 47 appearances on the season and has been trending in the wrong direction for weeks. He was reportedly close to being traded heading into the MLB trade deadline, but his recent struggles combined with the high price New York paid to acquire him in the offseason made a deal unlikely. Seth Lugo, who is having a strong season for the Mets, could see save opportunities if the Mets do indeed to look elsewhere.
