Cole Hamels

Yankees closest to trading for Cole Hamels

The Yankees have opened conversations with the Phillies to acquire Cole Hamels, offering the most lucrative prospect package. The Phillies may be in the market for 2B Rob Refsnyder if they are moving Chase Utley and could be also considering left hander Ian Clarkin and top prospects Luis Severino and Gary Sanchez. Fantasy Impact:

The Yankees are looking for a headline pitcher at the top of the rotation and Hamels would more than fill that void. Hamels had a 2.46 ERA in 2014 and has finished in the top-ten of the NL Cy Young in three of the past four seasons. He also has a 1.10 WHIP over the past four seasons, striking out 8.5 batters per nine innings. The Yankees could move Sanchez and Clarkin in a trade, considering their depth at SP and catcher in the system, but would be hurt by the loss of Severino and Refsnyder. Severino could be a top pitcher for the Yankees in the future and Refsnyder may break Spring Training as the Yankees starting 2B in 2015. No matter what team Hamels plays for in 2015, he is a top-ten SP.
