The team believes that McKay never got over the shoulder issue that plagued him last season. Rays manager Kevin Cash stated "We'll see how it kind of plays out. He's had some of those issues in the past, and we just want to do right by him." McKay had been throwing at the Rays' alternate site as he recovered from a positive COVID-19 test prior to summer camp. Everything had been going well until he started to experience some tightness. This is a precautionary move but it's yet another setback for the young lefty. The window to pitch this year is closing quickly with the season nearly a third of the way through.
