Nick Margevicius pitches well enough to secure first win

by Jon Mathisen | Fri, Aug 21st 11:56pm EDT

Nick Margevicius got the win on Friday when he gave up four runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking one over 5.1 innings in the Mariners 7-4 win over the Texas Rangers.

Fantasy Impact:

Margevicius was rolling through the first four innings, only allowing one base runner while fanning seven but started to run out of steam in fifth when he allowed a pair of doubles with a walk sandwiched in between. He then gave up a solo home run to Danny Santana in the top of sixth followed by back-to-back singles before being replaced by Joey Gerber, who allowed one of those runners to cross the plate on a sacrifice fly. He ended up being tagged with the four earned runs but he pitched much better than the box score showed. The 24-year old lefty pounded the strike zone, throwing 56 of his 82 pitches for strikes. He's been a pleasant surprise for the Mariners since he filled in for the injured Kendall Graveman in early August and certainly earned another start with this performance. He now carries a 4.12 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and an 18:3 K/BB ratio across 19.2 innings (three starts).
