John Gant records sixth hold in Game Two loss Thursday

by Lucas Babits-Feinerman | Fri, Sep 11th 2:05pm EDT

John Gant pitched two thirds of an inning, striking out one and allowing zero base runners to record his sixth hold of the season on Thursday. The Cardinals lost the game, 6-3, and fell to 19-18 on the season.

Fantasy Impact:

Gant might be a hot Waiver Wire add after this game because Giovanny Gallegos, the Cardinals' closer, suffered a groin injury. Gant has a 1.93 ERA in 14 innings pitched this season and has been the Cardinals second or third most effective bullpen arm behind Gallegos and arguably Austin Gomber. Gant leads the team in holds by a wide margin and is the most likely candidate to get first crack at the ninth inning if Gallegos is unavailable. Andrew Miller and Genesis Cabrera are the dark horse candidates with Miller being the front-runner of the two. Owners in standard 12-team redraft leagues who need saves can add Gant immediately as a speculative pickup.
