Giovanny Gallegos records second win of the season on Sunday

by Lucas Babits-Feinerman | Cardinals Correspondent | Mon, Sep 28th 3:00pm EDT

Giovanny Gallegos came in, in relief of Austin Gomber and pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth inning as the Cardinals topped the Brewers 5-2. He allowed one hit and struck out three throwing 21 pitches, 17 of them for strikes. The Cardinals improved to 30-28 with the victory and clinched a spot in the playoffs. It seems silly that Gallegos receives the win in a game where Austin Gomber pitched well for four innings simply because Gallegos got the fifth but those are the rules in MLB.

Fantasy Impact:

Gallegos, a part of the trade that brought Luke Voit to New York, was excellent for the Cardinals this season. His worst outing, where he allowed three earned runs without recording an out, occurred when he injured his groin and was placed on the IL after that game. He finishes the season 2-2 with four saves a 3.60 ERA, 2.74 xFIP, 12.60 K/9 and 5.25 K/BB over 15 innings pitched. His ERA without his injured groin game would be 1.80. The Cardinals' haven't given him a save opportunity since he returned from the IL so it is worth monitoring if he returns to the closers' role in the playoffs.
