Mike Clevinger signs two-year deal with Padres, will undergo Tommy John

The Padres announced they have signed RHP Mike Clevinger to a two-year contract and that he's undergoing Tommy John surgery on Tuesday. (San Diego Padres on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

This seems strange on the surface but Clevinger is already under team control for these two years, so both sides are just locking in the salaries as opposed to going through arbitration. The real story here is the Tommy John surgery. Clevinger dealt with elbow problems towards the end of the 2020 campaign and was barely used in the playoffs. He'll miss the entirety of the 2021 campaign, which means he's an afterthought for redraft fantasy preparation right now.
