Matt Barnes cleared to rejoin Red Sox after 'non-infectious positive' test

by Mike Maher | Nationals Correspondent | Mon, Mar 29th 3:10pm EDT

Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes was ruled to have a "non-infectious positive" for COVID-19 and is back in camp, as are all of the players who were deemed to be close contacts, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. (Joel Sherman on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

The Red Sox were reportedly investigating whether or not Barnes's positive test was a false positive, and it seems as if we have our answer. The "non-infectious positive" note from Sherman seems to indicate that the positive test was the result of Barnes having COVID-19 antibodies. While it looked like Barnes was likely to miss the first week of the season, it now appears he will be on the roster for Opening Day and is the favorite to see save opportunities to start the season. Adam Ottavino was the top candidate for the ninth inning with Barnes out but will now presumably return to high-leverage setup duties.
