Mark Melancon picks up 14th save of the season on Sunday

by Matt Flipi | Mon, May 17th 11:29am EDT

Mark Melancon earned his 14th save of the season in the Padres' win over the Cardinals on Sunday. Melancon did not strike out or walk anyone in the outing.

Fantasy Impact:

Melancon continues to lead the league in saves. In fact, he now has a three save cushion over Alex Reyes, who remains in second with 11. Melancon's strikeout rate took a big step forward late in April, but since then he hasn't been missing very many bats. That being said, his walk rate and ability to induce soft contact remain elite. The dip in strikeouts is a bit concerning in the long run, as Melancon is posting a career-low BABIP right now. That would seem to indicate Melancon is getting at least a little bit lucky in terms of balls not falling for hits more often against him. Even if some regression comes for Melancon, he'll continue to get opportunities and is on an All Star trajectory.
