According to St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt, Martinez underwent surgery the other day on his thumb to repair a torn ligament. He will miss the rest of the season. Martinez finishes 2021 with a (4-9) record and a 6.23 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and a 57:36 K: BB across 82 1/3 innings in 2021. The 29-year-old is in the final year of his five-year-$51 million contract. He has spent his entire career in St. Louis but has a team buyout of $500K in 2022, which could result at the end of his Cardinals playing days.
