Caleb Smith surrenders five runs in defeat

by Jon Mathisen | Diamondbacks Correspondent | Sun, Jul 25th 7:42pm EDT

LHP Caleb Smith took the loss on Sunday when he surrendered five runs on three hits with three walks and eight strikeouts over six innings in the D-Backs' 5-1 loss to the Cubs.

Fantasy Impact:

Smith was victimized by the long ball on Sunday, coughing up three homers. Kris Bryant (two-run) and Anthony Rizzo went back-to-back in the first inning before David Bote cracked a two-run shot of his own in the bottom of the fourth. Smith didn't help himself with three free passes but punched out eight, which tied a season-high. He now owns a lackluster 4.61 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 96:42 K/BB ratio over 84 innings (29 appearances, 11 starts). He'll get the Dodgers at home in his next start but isn't a recommended fantasy option.
