Kevin Gausman strikes out nine in a loss

by Jon Mathisen | Blue Jays Correspondent | Sat, Jul 31st 2:15am EDT

RHP Kevin Gausman took the loss on Friday when he allowed three runs on six hits with two walks and nine strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings as the Giants lost to the Astros 9-6.

Fantasy Impact:

This was an odd start for Gausman as he wasn't very efficient, needing 83 pitches---59 strikes--to get through his 4 1/3 innings. But he was also able to punch out nine batters. He allowed a pair of runs in the first inning and a solo home run to Jose Altuve in the fifth but ended up taking the loss. The 30-year-old hurler has now surrendered 11 runs over his last 20 innings but Friday felt like a step in the right direction despite taking the loss. He'll carry a 2.35 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and 149:39 K/BB ratio over 126 1/3 innings (21 starts). He'll look to get back in the win column in his next start against Arizona on the road.
