Tyler O'Neill powers Cards to victory with late go-ahead homer

by Lucas Spence | Red Sox Correspondent | Sun, Sep 19th 9:45am EDT

Cardinals outfielder Tyler O'Neill played the hero role on Saturday night, hitting a clutch, go-ahead, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the Cardinals to a 3-2 win over the Padres.

Fantasy Impact:

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning with a man on and two out, O'Neill hammered an Emilio Pagan off-speed pitch over the left field wall to lead the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory. With the Cardinals currently in possession of the second NL Wild Card spot and the Reds, Phillies, and Padres close behind, this homer was about as dramatic as it gets. Just the icing on the cake for what has been a marvelous season for the 26-year-old O'Neill, who is now up to 28 home runs (in just 123 games) and is hitting .328 with a 1.104 OPS in September as the Cardinals make their playoff push.
