by Kelly Kirby | Royals Correspondent | Fri, Jun 24th 1:01pm EDT

On Friday, the Royals announced C Salvador Perez would undergo surgery for his left thumb ulnar collateral ligament. He was placed on the IL retroactive to June 21. (Kansas City Royals on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact:

Perez injured the thumb on Tuesday, and MRI revealed structural damage. The All-Star catcher has struggled, slashing .211/.254/.426 with 11 home runs and 34 RBI. MJ Melendez will take over catching duties, with Cam Gallagher as a backup. The timetable for Perez's return is unknown, though some speculate it will be early August. Fantasy managers can stash Perez if the waiver wire is barren, and some potential replacements might be in the Cal Raleigh/Ryan Jeffers territory if they are available.
