Ranger Suarez benefits from massive run support on Saturday

by Dan Harris | Phillies Correspondent | Sat, Aug 6th 10:44pm EDT

Ranger Suarez allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings on Saturday against the Nationals. He struck out five and earned the win, moving to 8-5.

Fantasy Impact:

Suarez was staked to a nine-run lead by the end of the second inning and pitched well until running into trouble in the sixth. He was hardly dominant, with just a 16% whiff rate, but he did what pitchers are supposed to do when given a ton of run support - he pounded the strike zone and made sure the Nationals had to earn their production. Those waiting for the Suarez of last year will continue to be disappointed, and his respectable 3.68 ERA is accompanied by a dreadful 1.37 WHIP. But with the Phillies playing well and Suarez unlikely to hurt you, he's worth starting other than in difficult matchups. His next start will come against the Mets, and that should be one of those times where you look for better options.
