Questions of health following Felix Hernandez's rough start

by John Trupin | Wed, Aug 19th 8:06pm EDT

Hernandez was roughed up for 10 runs in only 2 1/3 innings pitched against Boston, allowing three home runs. While he is posting a strong season by most pitcher's standards, King Felix seems to be struggling this year. He has a 14-7 record, but his 3.65 ERA is his highest since 2007 and his FIP of 3.53 is nearly a whole run worse than last years 2.56, his worst since 2008. There is some speculation from outsiders that Hernandez may be suffering from a minor physical issue that is affecting his mechanics, as his release point has been far less consistent than in past seasons. Fantasy Impact:

Hernandez had a poor start against Houston earlier this season and bounced back well in his next few, so it is far too early to panic. Still, he has an ERA+ of 101, the second worst of his career, and has looked more mortal than in years past. Hernandez should still be an above-average pitcher the rest of the year, but with Seattle out of the playoff race, if the team detects anything wrong with their franchise player they may sit him down prior to the end of the season. Monitor his health closely over the next few weeks.
