Jose Bautista falls victim to the Chase Utley rule

by Alex Haeussler | Wed, Apr 6th 8:42am EDT

The Toronto Blue Jays lost in bizarre fashion on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays when in the 9th inning it appeared they had scored the tying and go ahead run on an errant throw by Logan Forsythe. This however was overturned thanks to the new Chase Utley rule. The play was reviewed and it was ultimately determined that Bautisa interfered with Forsythe when trying to turn a double play and both Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion were ruled out.

Fantasy Impact:

Jose Bautista has not yet recorded a home run, or even an RBI for that matter but he has been producing in other ways. In his 13 plate appearances so far this season, he has three hits and five walks. It seems the Tampa Bay Rays would much rather face Encarnacion than Bautista. This will obviously change once Encarnacion starts to heat up and teams will be forced to pitch to Bautista. Teams will quickly learn that Encarnacion is a threat and fantasy owners will reap the benefits of owning Bautista.
