James Shields outdueled by Jeff Samardzija

James Shields took the loss on Thursday against Jeff Samardzija and the Giants, allowing three runs (two earned) over 6 2/3 innings. Shields struck out seven and now has just a 3.07 ERA, but the loss dropped his record to 2-6.
Fantasy Impact:
Shields is still walking too many batters (22 in 58 2/3 innings), and so his WHIP of 1.33 remains high for the second straight year. And, unfortunately, he does not win many games pitching for a bad Padres team. Still, with a decent ERA and number of strikeouts, Shields has value as a low-end starter in mixed leagues. He'll take on the Giants again in his next start.
