Jonathan Papelbon to DL with intercostal strain

by Roy Widrig | Wed, Jun 15th 8:16am EDT

After being unavailable for Monday night's game, the Nationals placed closer Jonathan Papelbon on the 15-day DL with a right intercostal strain. Intercostals are the muscles between ribs, and can be very difficult to heal and could potentially get worse if rushed through the healing process.

Fantasy Impact:

It's entirely possible Papelbon will see more than the minimum of two weeks before returning from this injury. Shawn Kelley earned the first save in his absense on Monday, and has seen many adds in mixed leagues, but Felipe Rivero might be more suitable for the closer role. The team has made no announcement as to who will get the first shot at saving games for the Nats.
