Justus Sheffield notches fourth win of the year on Saturday
Justus Sheffield picked up a quality start and a win on Saturday when he allowed just one run on six hits to go along with five strikeouts and two walks in the M's 4-1 win over the Padres.
The stat line may not necessarily jump off the page but this was an excellent start against the high-powered Padres. Sheffield battled through his six innings of work, firing off 99 pitches--57 strikes--to stop the bleeding for the M's, who had lost four in a row entering Saturday. A Manny Machado single in the third inning was responsible for the only San Diego run. Sheffield has improved significantly from his brief stint with the Mariners in 2019, when opponents were hitting .303 off of him and his WHIP sat at 1.72 across 36 innings of work. In 2020, opponents are hitting .246 off the 24-year old and his ERA sits at 3.75 with a 1.29 WHIP, and a 47:18 K/BB ratio across 50 1/3 innings (nine starts). Primed to make another jump forward in 2021, he's a worthy mixed league starter going into next year, just as he was this season. Sheffield gets the first place A's in his final start of the season.
