Pack to the Future
Hopes were high for Johnson when he arrived in Houston last year but he never managed to live up to expectations. Now, it looks like he'll be playing second fiddle once again with David Johnson coming in from Arizona. In PPR Johnson has some upside but he's unlikely to be a reliable starter.Peterson once again finds himself in a starting role, albeit on what will likely be an underwhelming Washington offense. Expect rookie Antonio Gibson to see a decent amount of work, especially in the passing game but Peterson will still have value in standard leagues. He should also see the bulk of the goal-line carries.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
Despite continually being one of the most efficient running backs in football, it seems there's no head coach who wants to give Johnson his shot at a bigger role. This will be his sixth season in the NFL and he's never topped 104 carries in a season despite the fact that he's averaged 4.5 yards per carry (4.91 over the last four years) over his career. Now having to deal with David Johnson, whose best attribute is catching passes out of the backfield, it's unlikely Duke has any value with David healthy. However, it needs to be stated that David has played just 22 full games over the last three years and will be 29 years old at the end of the season. Should he miss time, Duke might get the opportunity that we've been waiting for. It's remarkable what Peterson's been able to do at 33 and 34 years old, compiling nearly 2,000 rushing yards over the last two seasons, but now 35 years old and in a new offense with tons of competition, it's hard to see him making a difference in fantasy football. He's still likely to command 10-15 carries per game and maybe get goal-line duties, so he could fill in for a few weeks in flex spots for those who are desperate.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
With the addition of David Johnson, there are a lot of unknowns here in Houston and this backfield. Duke should remain the pass-catching specialist, while David carries the ball primarily in-between the tackles. If we see David struggle again with injury though, Duke could be in line for a huge workload. With the recent news that Derrius Guice has been released by Washington, Adrian Peterson is the main beneficiary. While Peyton Barber, JD McKissic, and Antonio Gibson are all going to be involved in this offense too, AP should be moving up draft boards. He'll be a borderline RB3/RB4 this season and should be a consistent option to plug into your lineups on bye weeks, etc.
Ben Wasley
The Fantasy First Down
It's frustrating how a back who consistently has amazing metrics in Duke Johnson continually falls behind mediocre runners like Carlos Hyde. That certainly won't change this year either, with David Johnson the clear lead back and likely to steal some receptions as well. If David stays healthy all season there's little chance Duke is even startable. If the injury-prone DJ goes down though, it could be open season for the former Brown. I like him as a handcuff and desperation PPR starter but little else as a borderline RB3 finish is likely in his future. It's becoming increasingly likely Adrian Peterson somehow leads this backfield again. AD was very solid in 2019 and clearly still has the juice to be an NFL running back. While the sensible approach would be giving the many youngsters a proper chance, it's very possible Peterson is the starter and with the release of Derrius Guice, he's now a low-end starter who comes with plenty of job security risk.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Johnson is a fine running back who is always efficient, and yet never earns a large role with his team. He took a back seat to Carlos Hyde last year and now has to contend with David Johnson, a far superior pass-catching back to Hyde. In other words, if Duke Johnson didn't carve out a big role last year, it's tough to see him carving out one this year. He's a high-end handcuff option, but don't expect him to have much independent value absent an injury to David Johnson.Peterson admittedly continues to run well despite his advanced age, but given his situation, there's next to zero chance that he turns into someone you can start at any point. The Washington backfield consists of Peterson, Derrius Guice, Peyton Barber, J.D. McKissic, Antonio Gibson, and Bryce Love, and to the extent one back could break out of that pack, it's likely to be Guice. On a team going nowhere with a sub-par offense, there's no reason to waste a pick on Peterson.
