Since the start of the 2017 season, only Christian McCaffrey and Alvin Kamara have more RB targets than James White. Probably has quite a bit to do with Brady, but really so no reason why this won't continue with Cam or Stidham.I'm not taking the gamble on his bump in ADP since Cook threatened a holdout.
Bart Wheeler
Hail to Fantasy Football
Back into the top-40 with the addition of Cam. Could have the same/similar role as with Brady. This might be too low, especially in any sort of PPR/half PPR rankings. Also cracks my top-50 RBs with Dalvin Cook a potential holdout...
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Cam Newton's now at QB for the Patriots and he's shown a propensity for targeting pass-catching RBs. White's not going to suddenly turn into Christian McCaffrey, but he's a solid value right now in redraft ADP.With Dalvin Cook potentially holding out this season, Mattison should be on everyone's radar in the mid-rounds. He's in the right offense, and he has the talent, to be a RB1 each week that Cook misses.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
White had 908 yards from scrimmage and 6 touchdowns as the receiving back in this offense. His production is volatile and the backfield is deep, he is a flex option that will need to develop chemistry with new QB Cam Newton.
Seth Miller
Crossroads Fantasy Football
Will be interesting to see who's throwing him the ball in 2020 and if Sony/Harris can get involved in the passing game/on the field(cough, cough Harris) at all. Oh great, Stidham. A impossible offense to predict which Bill probably loves. We'll just have to rely far too much on preseason because relying on what Bill normally does would be relying on him never doing what you think. White has never played a year without Brady and we'll now have to rely on Stidham for those targets. I wonder if TE gets more involved this year, with Ben Watson leading the TE group with 24 targets last year. Could potentially impact White, plus probably not being top 5 in pass ATT.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
He's one of the trickiest evaluations in fantasy football this year, as losing Tom Brady is going to affect him in a big way. The question becomes: Just how much upside will he lose? White was never someone you relied on for RB1 or RB2 production, but he would give you spikes in production from your flex spot that could help you win a week. He's seen a massive 290 targets over the last three years, and it's extremely unlikely the Patriots have Jarrett Stidham drop back anywhere close to the number of times Brady did. Not just that, but Brady always targeted his running backs in the passing game. There are just too many questions to rely on him for anything for more than low-end RB3/high-end RB4 production. He's one of the best handcuffs in fantasy football. There were times in 2019 where he looked like Dalvin Cook on the field, which is a high compliment. We also cannot pretend that Cook has been the picture of perfect health throughout his three years in the NFL. Mattison won't have much value without a Cook injury, but that's okay when you draft him in the later rounds.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
White derives almost all of his value from his prowess as a receiver, as he's topped 67 carries just once in his career. While his work in the passing game (218 targets, 159 receptions over the past two years) has kept him as a solid, if perhaps inconsistent, fantasy option, it's unclear if that will continue this season. He will undoubtedly remain the Patriots' passing-down back, but it's unlikely that he'll see quite the same production with Jarrett Stidham. He'll remain an option in PPR leagues, but that's likely the only format in which he'll be relevant.Mattison is the best handcuff in fantasy football - period. He excelled last year whenever he got on the field, averaging 4.6 yards per carry, and clearly looked capable of taking on a featured role if called upon. On a team that ran the ball 48% last year (4th-most in the league), Mattison could be a league-winner if Dalvin Cook were to miss significant time, and should be stashed in every league.
