FantasyPros
As of right now, Hurns is the No. 1 receiver for the Cowboys, though you shouldn't expect him to carry that role for very long with Michael Gallup in the picture. Still, there's value for a wide receiver who will see anywhere from 5-8 targets from Dak Prescott. Hurns did produce quite a few fantasy relevant weeks with Blake Bortles, so it's possible he turns out to be better than most expect. It's possible that Doctson moves up my draft board as the season nears, as I want to see how he and new quarterback Alex Smith gel in the preseason. Smith has traditionally been a quarterback who doesn't throw into tight coverage, and Doctson was among the worst in the league last year when it came to yards of separation at target. He was followed by some top-tier cornerbacks last year, so it's possible that will influence the numbers, but Smith's style seems to fit Jamison Crowder's and Jordan Reed's skill-set a bit more than Doctson's. He's got some potential, but the situation just doesn't seem to be ideal.
Staff Rankings
QB List
This one's pretty simple: Hurns is a veteran with underwhelming athleticism, crisp routes, and what could be a consistently high target share as a defacto #1 receiver. If that doesn't scream bargain bin WR3 production then idk what does.Looking to make the "sophomore jump", the athletically gifted 2nd year receiver must now compete with Paul Richardson for red zone and downfield targets while Jamison Crowder mans the slot. He COULD establish a large role with peak performance in the red zone, but with the pricey new signing occupying a similar role, I wouldn't bet on anything more than mediocre production.
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
The Cowboys have one of the worst receiving groups in the league, without a doubt, but Hurns is easily the best of the bunch right now. Michael Gallup could end up as the No. 1 target this season, although Hurns should be the favorite.Doctson has plenty of talent and will be given his chances to succeed. I'd like to see some of that success before going all-in on him, but if he falls, we know he'll get his targets.
Andrew Gould
FantasyPros
The case for Hurns is simple: Who else is going to catch passes in Dallas? Although limited to 74 receptions over 21 games in the past two seasons, the 26-year-old joins a passing offense that bid farewell to Dez Bryant and Jason Witten. Then again, wasn't he supposed to be Jacksonville's top option when Allen Robinson went down for the season? He averaged a tame 48.4 YPG and did not garner a red-zone target after Week 4. Cole Beasley, Terrance Williams, and/or Michael Gallup could also answer the opening question, so treat Hurns as no more than bench depth with a solid target stream. While Doctson compiled 502 yards in an underwhelming sophomore campaign, he received 56 of last season's 78 targets over Washington's final eight games. He also reeled in just 35 of those looks and now must establish a rapport with Alex Smith. Yet drafters can do worse in terms of a dart throw. The hype (WR57 ADP) had dissipated, and few pass-catchers who led his team in red-zone targets (16) are available so late.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
He's been hampered by injuries over the past couple of years, but when he has stayed health and gotten the targets he has been successful. His best season was in 2015, he had 105 Targets for 64 Receptions at 1031 Yards for 10 TDs, that's 16.11 Yards Per Reception and a 61% Catch Rate coming from Blake Bortles. He finished as the WR14 in Standard Scoring and WR18 in PPR.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
The word is that Hurns is the Cowboys' clear-cut number one receiver as of now. He has produced before in an expanded role so it isn't crazy to see him performing as a flex play from week to week now that Dak is his QB.We didn't get the best numbers from Doctson, so it makes sense why many will be avoiding him, but do consider that he is the Redskins' top receiver, and that is exactly why defenses focused on locking him down with their shadow corners. He had the single toughest set of matchups last season and as that lets up, we should see plenty of production.
Raju Byfield
Win My Fantasy League
The Boys finally have a half way competent #2Will have to compete with Richardson and Crowder for targets but will benefit from improved quarterback play
