Andrew Erickson FantasyPros | Amari Cooper finished last season 27th in half-PPR per game (11.2), which was in line with his career average. There is hope that he can provide a higher floor as the clear No. 1 wide receiver in Cleveland. And that floor will be accompanied by an extremely high ceiling with Deshaun Watson entrenched under center over the final 10 games of the season. The ex-Texans quarterback fueled top fantasy WR finishes for the likes of Brandin Cooks (WR16, 2020) and Will Fuller (WR8/game, 2020) the last time he played. And prior to that, he supplemented DeAndre Hopkins as the fantasy WR4 and WR10 from 2018-2019. However, the boom-or-bust nature to his game will likely remain a staple of his game. Having Brissett over the first six weeks - alongside a projectable run-heavy offense - will make Cooper inconsistent. Although Brissett can prove to be serviceable, he is a significant downgrade compared to Dak Prescott. If Cooper only managed to finish as WR27 in 15 games with Prescott, it's hard to be optimistic about him as the Browns WR1 or your fantasy WR2. There's also a glaring issue of the indoor/outdoor splits that Cooper has posted during his career. | RIP Michael Carter RB1 szn. The Jets drafted workhorse running back Breece Hall at the top of the 2nd round, but even considered trading up for him in Round 1 before selecting him 36th overall. The draft capital shows New York's commitment towards Hall being their clear-cut RB1 for 2022 and beyond, which makes Carter nothing more than a hand-cuff. It's a reminder to always sell high on Day 3 running backs that flash as rookies; they can be easily replaced and likely won't "survive" draft after draft without investment from their team. Carter's looking anywhere between five-to-eight touches per game with Hall entrenched as the bellcow, making the former UNC back near obsolete as anything other than a backup with some upside. From Weeks 7-9 with Tevin Coleman sidelined, Carter averaged 19 touches per game and a 66% snap share. He also finished 10th in yards after contact per attempt (3.4) and third in PFF's elusive rating. Carter's receiving ability also fueled four top-17 weekly finishes in 2021, three of which were inside the top-13 in games that featured quarterback checkdown king Mike White under center. |
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | Cooper had only 97 targets, 63 receptions, 786 yards, and eight touchdowns in the 2021 fantasy season. Cooper is now a Brown and while he will have upside catching balls from Deshaun Watson, that will not happen for the first 11games due to Watson's suspension. That makes Cooper a low upside WR3 with WR2 upside late in the season.
Brandon Funston The Athletic | His stock rises and falls on the tide of the Deshaun Watson off-field drama, but few WRs will command his Target share no matter who the QB is
Mark Ringo Sleepers and Busts | Cooper's value hinges on DeShaun Watson's suspension. If Watson gets suspended for most of the season, Cooper's outlook takes a nosedive. QB Jacoby Brissett is more of a game manager than a gunslinger. And Cleveland is a run-oriented offense as it is. WR 22 is way too high for a WR on Browns' offense that figures to struggle this year. Keep an eye on Watson's suspension news this summer. Once we know for certain if and when he'll be back in 2022, that's when we can more accurately predict Browns' players. Until then- avoid!
Wolf of Roto Street Roto Street Journal | 8/3: 8/3: Up-and-down we go. Now the NFL Appeals & will push for season-long suspension, most expect it to stick. I'm ranking as if Watson won't play in 2022 until told otherwise - wish is a huge downgrade for Cooper, Njoku, Chubb, Hunt, everyone. Avoid CLE. 8/1: The ruling is in: 6 games. As absurd as that is, it gives Watson & his pass-catchers a whole lot more appeal, greatly raising all their ceilings for the last 2/3rds of the season (Cooper, DPJ, Njoku) 7/19: Wastson's suspension likely being 8 or under significantly raises the appeal of ALL Browns Pass-catchers, especially Cooper *UPDATEx 3 (6/8) - Liklihood of major DW Suspension coming, potentially for full year. Cooper takes a huge hit with dramatic drop in QB play & likely huge schematic shifts
Kevin Wheeler The Draft Zone | Fourth-best WR at generating step or more of separation vs. single-man coverage in 2021 (min 70 routes), 65% @dwainmcfarland | I've been high on Carter all summer because his ADP is so low and he performed well when called upon last season. The problem is Breece Hall is better at everything compared to Carter and the bulk of Carter's production also came when Zach Wilson was out. Carter benefits from a QB that will dump the ball down to his RB under pressure. Wilson is a tuck and run guy. |
