Sleepers and Busts
Mixon is a rare three down RB. He's excellent at catching passes and a talented runner. The comp scouts gave when he came out of college was LeVeon Bell. Gio Bernard left for Tampa in free agency so he should get the third down work. The concern: 1.) Did the Bengals do enough in the offseason up front to help the blocking for Mixon and Burrow? They signed Riley Reiff in free agency and drafted Jackson Carman out of Clemson. Mixon might be a year away from fantasy greatness. He has the chops. That's not in doubt. The question, is that enough in 2021? If things break right- (aka- Joe Burrow must stay healthy)- then yes!!!Well this call could make me look really smart or really foolish. Just an fyi- the smart money is on foolish haha! Antonio Gibson is still recovering from a turf toe injury he suffered in late 2020. That's a concern. If he's okay, then things could get real interesting. Coach Ron Rivera said he wants him to be more involved in the passing game (Note- he played WR in college). He came into the NFL really raw as a RB which means he could make a huge leap. Gibson is one of the few RBs with major three down upside if things break right, well assuming it's not his toe. He's big (220 lbs), fast (ran a 4.39 40 yard dash), and a natural playmaker. Can his toe hold up? That's the million dollar question? If it does, lookout! Gibbaay!!!
Kevin Wheeler
The Draft Zone
Last season we thought Antonio Gibson would be a receiving threat out of the backfield and likely limited rushing, given his collegiate experience. Gibson's most likely utilization comps for 2021 are Jonathan Taylor and Derrick Henry with 60-70% attempts and 5-8% of targets. *If* he does take over McKissic's passing-down work - we are talking certified beast usage. McKissic seems very likely to continue his same role, but I would put Gibson's odds as more likely to keep McKissick off the field than JT is to displace Hines or Henry to spike in targets. Gibson just barely trailed McKissic in YPRR and PFF receiving grade last year. Gibson was not good in limited pass pro chances, that's where he needs to show improvement.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Did you know that Joe Mixon has actually played more games than Dalvin Cook since they both came into the league in 2017? Yet somehow Mixon gets labeled as an injury risk every single season and Cook is being drafted as a top-3 pick this year. While Cook's production when he's on the field is certainly worthy of a top-3 pick, it goes to show the recency bias that comes into play for fantasy managers when they're on the clock. When Mixon is on the field, he's going to receive one of the heaviest workloads in the entire league. He's one of the most talented RBs in the league and this offense is set to take a major jump in 2021 with Joe Burrow and his surfeit of receiving weapons. If Mixon had been shut down immediately last season and put on IR when his injury occurred, we wouldn't have this perception in our minds of him as a huge injury risk. However, because of Zac Taylor's inconsistent commitment to Mixon returning to the lineup last year, fantasy managers have a bad taste in their mouths. Go get some mouthwash, clean out that taste, and draft Mixon at a major discount this year. The production's going to be too good to pass up. My Very Early Projection: 298-1193-9 rushing & 61-459-2 receiving. After being barely utilized as a runner in college, Gibson came out on fire in his rookie season. He averaged 4.7 YPC and 11 rushing touchdowns, which is absurd for a player who saw only 33 total carries in college. Heading into 2021, the sky's the limit for Gibson and what he can do with this experience to his name. He should receive a larger workload this upcoming season and this offense is going to be more potent due to the QB upgrade. You're going to have to pay up for Gibson and it's hard to take him over some more proven names, but this is a swing for the fences selection that has a very good chance of making it out of the park.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
Over the final nine games of 2019, Zac Taylor gave Mixon 214 touches (23.8 per game), which made us believe they'd finally realized he should be used in a workhorse fashion. The start of 2020 wasn't as generous, but he did average 19.7 touches per game over the first three weeks. Then we saw Giovani Bernard get knocked out of the lineup for a few weeks, and it led to Mixon totaling 27.0 touches per game over the next three weeks before getting hurt. Now that Bernard is gone, are we finally going to get a full season's worth of 20-plus touch games for Mixon? If so, top-five is in the realm of possibilities, especially knowing he'll be more involved in the passing game. Don't sleep on Mixon; he's still a top-10 running back talent-wise.I like Gibson, it's not that I don't. The issue is that he's not heavily involved in the passing game, and he topped 94 yards on the ground just twice all of last season, with both of those games coming against the Cowboys. In fact, 28.7 percent of his fantasy points in 2020 were against the Cowboys. I can certainly see Gibson finishing higher than my ranking, but those above him have either (a) a more consistent track record, or (b) less question marks. He scored a touchdown once every 15.5 carries last year, a number that's surely to go up.
Derek Lofland
FantasyPros
Mixon has averaged only 4.5 and 4.0 yards per touch the last two years and he missed 10 games with injury last year. Mixon has a ton of talent, but he is a dicey RB2 due to injuries and a bad offensive line.Gibson averaged 13.2 fantasy points per game in his rookie year and he should have a lot of upside in his second year if Washington ups his usage in his second year.
Brendan Tuma
FantasyPros
Entering his fifth season in the NFL, Joe Mixon is once again set up for a massive fantasy campaign -- on paper, at least. We've been here before with Mixon and it hasn't always gone according to plan. For those who view him as injury prone following a frustrating 2020 in the health department, it's important to note that he appeared in 44-of-48 possible games from 2017-19. The departure of Gio Bernard to the Bucs gives Mixon a legitimate chance at seizing a three-down workload in (likely) the best/fastest offense he has ever played in. It's set up for him to smash. O n paper, at least...
Wolf of Roto Street
Roto Street Journal
No Gio Bernard. No real rookie competition added. Even more explosive offense with Chase here assuming Burrow is healthy. Line may suck, but Mixon is easily o ne of the top winners of the offseason.More positive game-scripts & TD opportunities, plus Scott Turner could just decide to give Gibson the full CMac bellcow treatment he so deserves. -- BUT this latest toe news is aggravating.
Joe Pisapia
FantasyPros
It's easy to understand people being frustrated with Joe Mixon in 2020, but once Joe Burrow was done, there was no reason to push him back onto the field after his injury. The Bengals invested heavily in Joe Mixon last off season, and there are no challengers to his position in the offense. He also had back to back 1K yard rushing seasons before 2020's disappointment. Having faith and buying back into Mixon for '21 is a good idea and will be rewarded.
Tim Petropoulos
BRoto Fantasy
Beware of the narrative of "improved OL." The addition of rookies can be a great thing for an offensive line, i.e. last year's Tampa Bay Bucs, but it can also make a glaring problem worse, i.e. last year's NY Giants. Mixon will likely see insane volume, but he has been historically inefficient and, unless 2nd-round-pick OT Jackson Carman is a transcendent talent, there is no way you can predict, with a straight face, Mixon will be more efficient with his opportunities. Unless you are getting Mixon as your RB 2 in the late second or third round of your drafts, stay away.
