Andrew Erickson FantasyPros | Austin Ekeler isn't used as a true three-down workhorse, but it's hard to tell based on the actual amount of touches he sees in the Los Angeles Chargers offense. At 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds, Ekeler finished 8th in the NFL in total touches (276) and 14th in touches per game (17.2). But the raw touches hardly showcase the fantasy value Ekeler possesses, because he often commands an extremely high-share of high-value targets ie. targets and red-zone opportunities. His 13.9% target share and 70 receptions ranked second behind only Najee Harris. Ekeler's 18 red-zone touchdowns and 63 red-zone touches ranked first and second respectively. With such a secure role as a receiver out of the backfield and as a featured red-zone weapon in a high-powered offense, it's hard to imagine a healthy Ekeler not returning at least top-5 fantasy status in 2022. He wrapped a bow on the 2021 season as the RB3 in points per game and RB2 overall in half-point scoring. | There's really not much left to say when it comes to Hunter Renfrow. The kid's a certified stud and doesn't get the respect he deserves. The Raiders slot receiver hung a WR13 overall finish last season due to a spectacular late-season surge. He went over 100 receiving yards in three straight games (Weeks 12-14) while maintaining a 25% target share. From Week 12 onward, his production generated a WR8 standing in half-point scoring. Renfrow made the most of the opportunities he got in 2021, and that won't change in 2022. Adding Davante Adams and Darren Waller will make targets for Renfrow harder to come by, but stay rest assured that the shifty wideout will perform if either guy is forced to miss time. |
Mark Ringo Sleepers and Busts | Last year I was way off on Ekeler. I didn't think he would hold up. And once again I'm out on Ekeler- not because he's not a good RB, but rather because of his expensive price tag (RB 3) and the looming presence of rookie RB Isaiah Spiller. Spiller is bigger than Ekeler. It's clear the Chargers want to lighten Ekeler's volume. Spiller could easily vulture Ekeler at the goal line. A first-round price tag for a RB who might have his TDs vultured at the goal line is too rich for my blood. I'm out.
Kevin Wheeler The Draft Zone | Last season was the strongest and healthiest of Ekeler's five-year career. He still fell short of a thousand rushing yards (911), but Ekeler's points come from the receiving game. His 70 receptions for 647 yards were far short of his 2019 numbers, but with Herbert at QB he's not going to see the dump-down passes he did with Rivers. The concern for Ekeler is that he losses some red-zone work with the addition of the rookie, Spiller, but it could have a positive effect of keeping him healthier in the long-run as well. | I've been fading Renfrow, but certain analysts (Dwain McFarland) are influencing me to draft him when he falls to me. Renfrow operates out of the slot mostly and new-comer Davante Adams is an outside alpha. The prevailing wisdom is that Renfrow benefited from Waller being out for six weeks last season, but he really only saw a significant increase in targets in one of those games. He also had nine TD's last year, which we should expect some regression, but only three of them came while Waller was sidelined. |
Wolf of Roto Street Roto Street Journal | 5/2: Line beefed up, but Spiller is also most legit RB he's ever had to share a backfield with. Still should be a monster in receiving & Red Zone | Target upside takes hit w/ Adams added, but Renfrow should feast still as Josh McDaniels slot & w/ DAdams commanding attention |
Nick Spencer Fantasy Six Pack | Low upside with waller and adams taking TDs, of course better in PPR.
Justin Lampkin Clock Management Fantasy Football | This is the safest 1st round pick for me, Ekeler is a true duel threat, running and receiving the football. He is still young and an explosive offense that will score more often than not. | Last year was great for Renfrow, unfortunately he had one the greatest WR's in the NFL come to his team that already has a relationship with their QB in Davante Adams. Renfrow will get plenty of work in the slot but his numbers will be a compressed version of last season. |
Brandon Funston The Athletic | In PPR formats, has highest Fantasy Points per Touch mark among RBs over the past 3 seasons (min. 30 games)
Derek Lofland FantasyPros | Ekeler had a breakout elite RB1 year with 1,459 yards from scrimmage and 18 touchdowns in the fantasy season. He should be an elite RB1 playing with Justin Herbert in 2022. | Renfrow had a breakout season with 1,032 yards receiving and 7 receiving touchdowns in the fantasy season, but he is likely going to lose some targets with Davante Adams on the roster and Darren Waller hopefully not missing as many games this year. Renfrow figures to be more WR3 than WR2 this year. |
