Did you know that Joe Mixon has actually played more games than Dalvin Cook since they both came into the league in 2017? Yet somehow Mixon gets labeled as an injury risk every single season and Cook is being drafted as a top-3 pick this year. While Cook's production when he's on the field is certainly worthy of a top-3 pick - don't get me wrong - it goes to show the recency bias that comes into play for fantasy managers when they're on the clock. When Mixon is on the field, he's going to receive one of the heaviest workloads in the entire league. He's a top-5 talent at the RB position in the league and this offense is set to take a major jump in 2021 with Joe Burrow and his bevy of receiving weapons. If Mixon had been shut down immediately last season and put on IR when his injury occurred, we wouldn't have this perception in our minds of him as a huge injury risk. However, because of Zac Taylor's inconsistent commitment to Mixon returning to the lineup last year, fantasy managers have a bad taste in their mouths. Go get some mouthwash, clean out that taste, and draft Mixon at a major discount this year. The production's going to be too good to pass up and if you can get him as a RB2 on your roster, you're well on your way to a fantasy championship.Ekeler fell short of expectations last season, but missing several games will do that. When he was on the field, Ekeler was still an incredibly relevant fantasy option that displayed his receiving prowess time and time again. Since 2017, he ranks 4th in the NFL in total receiving yards and he's tied for first over that time span with 16 receiving touchdowns. There's very little reason to doubt Ekeler heading into this season and he should be back in the low-end RB1/high-end RB2 conversation in Half PPR formats. Additionally, he does receive a slight bump up in Full PPR formats. You know exactly what you're going to get from him each and every week and that's invaluable in fantasy football.

Sleepers and Busts
Mixon is a rare three down RB. He's excellent at catching passes and a talented runner. The comp scouts gave when he came out of college was LeVeon Bell. Gio Bernard left for Tampa in free agency so he should get the third down work. The concern: 1.) Did the Bengals do enough in the offseason up front to help the blocking for Mixon and Burrow? They signed Riley Reiff in free agency and drafted Jackson Carman out of Clemson. Mixon might be a year away from fantasy greatness. He has the chops. That's not in doubt. The question, is that enough in 2021? If things break right- (aka- Joe Burrow must stay healthy)- then yes!Joe Lombardi takes over the offensive coordinator duties. He came over from New Orleans with the coaching change. That could be good news for Ekeler. Lombardi likes a lot of quick passes. He used Alvin Kamara a lot out of the backfield. If he uses Ekeler the same way, fantasy owners will be ecstatic. Ekeler is best used in a RBBC. He's not big enough to hold up with a full workload. Still though, he is an excellent receiver. In half point and full point PPR formats, this might be the perfect storm for Ekeler to return to fantasy glory in 2021. The question is Ekeler more like Alvin Kamara or Darren Sproles. My best guess is Sproles which makes him a risky pick in the early rounds.

Though Mixon is collectively viewed as a "pass-catching back," his career high in single-season receptions is just 43 from 2018. He was on pace to blow his rushing and receiving numbers out of the water in 2020 before injury caused him to miss 10 games. Still, it's worth noting that Mixon has never racked up 1,500 scrimmage yards or double-digit touchdowns, and he's never finished higher than RB9 in a single season. It's tough for me not to rank Ekeler even higher, but I'll temper expectations a little bit simply due to the talent of the four other backs ranked ahead of him. Ekeler scored just three touchdowns in 2020, the lowest mark of his career despite logging his second-most touches (170). He scored 11 times in 2019, and it's reasonable to expect positive touchdown regression in 2021. Ekeler's biggest asset is his pass-catching ability. He's secured 146 receptions over his last 26 games, good for 5.6 per contest, or 89.8 over a 16-game season.

No Gio Bernard. No real rookie competition added. Even more explosive offense with Chase here assuming Burrow is healthy. Line may suck, but Mixon is easily one of the top winners of the offseason -- and OC has publicly stated he has "no interest in load management" as Mixon looks like the best player in campHuge line improvements with Linsley and NOW Slater at OT too, should be Round 2 steal with Top-5 overall upside -- just be wary of coaches preaching an RBBC appraoch.

Over the final nine games of 2019, Zac Taylor gave Mixon 214 touches (23.8 per game), which made us believe they'd finally realized he should be used in a workhorse fashion. The start of 2020 wasn't as generous, but he did average 19.7 touches per game over the first three weeks. Then we saw Giovani Bernard get knocked out of the lineup for a few weeks, and it led to Mixon totaling 27.0 touches per game over the next three weeks before getting hurt. Now that Bernard is gone, are we finally going to get a full season's worth of 20-plus touch games for Mixon? If so, top-five is in the realm of possibilities, especially knowing he'll be more involved in the passing game. Don't sleep on Mixon; he's still a top-10 running back talent-wise.In eight full games with Justin Herbert under center last year, Ekeler saw 63 targets. Over a full 16-game season, that amounts to 126 targets. While I don't expect him to get there, he's one of just two running backs (Christian McCaffrey is the other) who I'm projecting for 100-plus targets in 2021. Targets are worth twice as much as carries, so even if Ekeler winds up getting just 12 carries per game, it's not the end of the world. In fact, he can still finish as a borderline RB1 if he were to hit just 200 carries on the season. The new coaching staff obviously brings on some potential volatility, but there's not much other talent on the roster at running back, so his role should be very safe.

If Mixon can stay healthy, HC Taylor is basically showing his cards that he plans to make him one of the highest volume RBs in the NFLFilling the Kamara role for new OC Joe Lombardi, a healthy Ekeler could push his previous receptions career high (92)

Ekeler not getting goal line carries should not be news. In 2019, Ekeler had 7 carries inside the 5, scoring only twice. Ekeler also scored 11 total TDs that year and finished as the PPR RB4.

Entering his fifth season in the NFL, Joe Mixon is once again set up for a massive fantasy campaign -- on paper, at least. We've been here before with Mixon and it hasn't always gone according to plan. For those who view him as injury prone following a frustrating 2020 in the health department, it's important to note that he appeared in 44-of-48 possible games from 2017-19. The departure of Gio Bernard to the Bucs gives Mixon a legitimate chance at seizing a three-down workload in (likely) the best/fastest offense he has ever played in. It's set up for him to smash. O n paper, at least...This time last year we were anticipating Ekeler to have some struggles as a pass-catcher due to Tyord Taylor entering the season as the Chargers' starting QB. We know what happened next, and now Ekeler's arrow is pointing up in a big way, particularly in full PPR formats. Once he returned from his midseason injury, Ekeler averaged 6.2 catches per games and 90.2 yards per games from Weeks 12-17. Offensive line upgrades combined with a potential Year 2 Justin Herbert leap gives Ekeler a thrilling floor/ceiling combo for 2021 fantasy football leagues.

It's easy to understand people being frustrated with Joe Mixon in 2020, but once Joe Burrow was done, there was no reason to push him back onto the field after his injury. The Bengals invested heavily in Joe Mixon last off season, and there are no challengers to his position in the offense. He also had back to back 1K yard rushing seasons before 2020's disappointment. Having faith and buying back into Mixon for '21 is a good idea and will be rewarded.Austin Ekeler is your classic PPR running back. He's in line for a ton of receptions and all purpose yardage with the Chargers this year. However, TDs are not his strong suit. Ekeler found te end zone just 3 times in 10 games last year. In auction leagues, Ekeler is the poor man's Alvin Kamara. In standard leagues, yards are yards, but his lack of goal line work could hold back his overall value. Still, he's a low end RB1 in all formats.

Beware of the narrative of "improved OL." The addition of rookies can be a great thing for an offensive line, i.e. last year's Tampa Bay Bucs, but it can also make a glaring problem worse, i.e. last year's NY Giants. Mixon will likely see insane volume, but he has been historically inefficient and, unless 2nd-round-pick OT Jackson Carman is a transcendent talent, there is no way you can predict, with a straight face, Mixon will be more efficient with his opportunities. Unless you are getting Mixon as your RB 2 in the late second or third round of your drafts, stay away.

FantasyPros
Mixon has averaged only 4.5 and 4.0 yards per touch the last two years and he missed 10 games with injury last year. Mixon has a ton of talent, but he is a dicey RB2 due to injuries and a bad offensive line.Ekeler battled some injuries, but still had 138.3 fantasy points in just 10 games. He should be a RB1 playing with Justin Herbert, if Ekeler can stay healthy.
