Andrew Gould
FantasyPros
A boring fantasy contributor throughout his career, Smith finished QB4 during a year in which he led the NFL in AY/A (8.6). He joins forces with Jay Gruden, who squeezed a QB5 campaign out of Andy Dalton in 2013. Smith had never eclipsed 4,000 passing yards before barely clearing the benchmark in 2017, but he should steer clear of the game-manager label in a pass-heavy Washington offense that lost rookie RB Derrius Guice for the season. Smith also tallied the fifth-most rushing yards (355) at the position last year. He can regress and still provide considerable value at his cynical going rate. The quintessential "better in fantasy than real life" player, Bortles has notched QB4, 9, and 13 finishes over the past three seasons. He even swung some leagues for managers bold enough to throw their Molotov cocktails in the air and shout "Bortles!" before tossing him into the starting lineup. Only Todd Gurley recorded more fantasy points from Weeks 12 to 16, so there's a solid chance he out-earns his draft price. On the other hand, he's not that great at actual football, and the Jaguars will gladly relegate him to a gatekeeper role when the game script allows it. They shouldn't throw enough to drag him back into the top 10.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
Most people say that 2017 was an outlier year for Smith, and while it's hard to disagree that it was better than the rest, he's been doing this for a while now. Since 2011, Smith has thrown 132 touchdowns compared to just 43 interceptions. In that period, there are just two quarterbacks who have a better TD:INT ratio than him: Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. You don't do that over a seven-year period if you're a mediocre quarterback. With Jay Gruden's history with Kirk Cousins, it's very possible that we're underestimating Smith's fantasy potential. If you're the type to grab two quarterbacks in a draft, Smith would make an excellent No. 2 who has top-10 upside. While many spend a fortune to acquire Deshaun Watson, many are overlooking the fact that Bortles had "almost" as good of a stretch that Watson did. From Week 13-16 (four games), Bortles threw for 321.3 yards and 2.3 touchdowns per game. During Watson's five-game stretch, he averaged 294.4 yards and 3.6 touchdowns per game. The reason people think Watson could be the real-deal is because that's really one of the only sample size we have on him, whereas most "know what they are getting" with Bortles. Is that fair, though, considering he was a top-10 quarterback twice? Bottom line is that Bortles has been really streaky and has shown more bad than good, but the hate on him has gone a bit too far this offseason. With him rushing for at least 310 yards in every season, it's possible that we see him finish inside the top-15 this year, though you don't want to pay for those up-and-downs in his performances.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
Don't forget that Smith posted more fantasy points per game last year than Cam Newton, Tom Brady and even Aaron Rodgers while he was healthy. His new weapons aren't quite as good, but with that production, Smith has to be in the conversation as a QB1, especially considering he may finally throw more than 505 passes this season. You may want to give up on Bortles, but he has now been a QB1 three consecutive seasons and managed to be the #2 QB over the final five weeks of the season. It is never pretty, but he gets the job done from a production perspective. He is a reliable option in two-QB leagues.

Staff Rankings
QB List
Alex Smith was the prototypical high-floor, low-ceiling quarterback for a lot of his career in Kansas City. He did a good job of not turning the ball over but he rarely threw the ball deep at all, opting to keep the game short and safe. All of that changed last year, and Smith completely reinvented himself. He still did a good job of not turning the ball over, but he started getting a lot more aggressive, throwing a lot more deep balls and taking chances in one-on-one matchups, and it paid off big time. About 12% of Smith's throws last year were on go-routes, and when he threw the ball to a receiver running that route, he had a QB rating of 136.8. Overall, on deep passes, Smith led the league in adjusted completion percentage at 56.5%, total yards at 1,344, and passer rating at 129.6, and tied for the lead in touchdowns at 12. Now, Smith moves to Washington into a Jay Gruden team that saw plenty of fantasy productivity from Kirk Cousins. Smith doesn't exactly have a top-quality receiver like he did in Tyreek Hill last year, nor does he have a running back as talented as Kareem Hunt or a tight end as consistently excellent as Travis Kelce, but that doesn't mean Washington is bereft of talent. Josh Doctson and Jamison Crowder have shown plenty of flashes of talent, and Jordan Reed is as good as just about any tight end in football when he's healthy (and that's a big caveat). Smith isn't going to repeat the season he had last year, but if he continues being aggressive and playing like he did last season, he can still put up some quality fantasy numbers. One of the most frustrating and inconsistent quarterbacks around, Bortles had yet another trademark Bortles year last year, with some great highs, some awful lows, and no consistency to be seen. Bortles did have his lowest interception total in a season, which is good, but likely was a result of the Jaguars' efforts to protect him with a good defense and a good running game, and less a result of his actual skill. Losing Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns certainly isn't going to help his offensive prospects, however the team will still likely have a good defense and run game, and Marqise Lee should be a solid-enough top option for him. Still, I wouldn't expect much more from Bortles than what you've seen in the past-an inconsistent quarterback who will likely have four to six games where he's excellent, you just won't have any idea which games those will be.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
Smith proved last year he's a baller and his weapons in DC really aren't bad at all. I love him as a top-20 guy again this year and there is upside for a top-10 finish if all goes wellBortles was better than expected in the second half of last year but how long will the optimism last?

Jody Smith
FantasyPros
Smith's impressive passing numbers last season stick out as a tad fluky. Moving on to a new system, with a lesser supporting cast leads Smith's projections to plummet. Perennially underrated due to his rushing prowess, I think the Jags are likely to explore QB as early as the first round.
