FantasyPros
The quintessential "better in fantasy than real life" player, Bortles has notched QB4, 9, and 13 finishes over the past three seasons. He even swung some leagues for managers bold enough to throw their Molotov cocktails in the air and shout "Bortles!" before tossing him into the starting lineup. Only Todd Gurley recorded more fantasy points from Weeks 12 to 16, so there's a solid chance he out-earns his draft price. On the other hand, he's not that great at actual football, and the Jaguars will gladly relegate him to a gatekeeper role when the game script allows it. They shouldn't throw enough to drag him back into the top 10.Identifying Trubisky as this year's Jared Goff feels as hackneyed as a broadcaster marveling over Ryan Fitzpatrick's Harvard education. Following a quiet rookie campaign stuck in John Fox's antiquated offense, the Chicago passer should air it out far more with former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy calling the shots. The Bears also bolstered the receiving corps by adding Allen Robinson, Trey Burton, and Anthony Miller, so don't pay much attention to last year's 182.8 passing yards per game. The biggest hindrance for investors will be the ballooning hype offsetting any profit potential.
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
You may want to give up on Bortles, but he has now been a QB1 three consecutive seasons and managed to be the #2 QB over the final five weeks of the season. It is never pretty, but he gets the job done from a production perspective. He is a reliable option in two-QB leagues. The Bears are expected to let Trubisky loose this season with the additions of Matt Nagy, Allen Robinson and Trey Burton. He could be this year's Jared Goff, but that doesn't mean you should draft him with that expectation. There is plenty of risk as well and we are merely hoping he will perform like Case Keenum and Blake Bortles did last year.
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
Bortles can have good fantasy days, but he won't be asked to do that much with the defense and running game being the strengths of this offense. His running ability and the fact that he's quarterbacking a winning team means he should be more consistent than his worst games seem to foretell.I want Trubisky higher than this, but we are in a bunched-up tier. I like his upside over some of the guys in front of him, yet I think I'll take a wait-and-see approach for now.
Kevin Wheeler
NFL Mock
Weeks 12-17 Bortles was the QB2 in fantasy points scored
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
While many spend a fortune to acquire Deshaun Watson, many are overlooking the fact that Bortles had "almost" as good of a stretch that Watson did. From Week 13-16 (four games), Bortles threw for 321.3 yards and 2.3 touchdowns per game. During Watson's five-game stretch, he averaged 294.4 yards and 3.6 touchdowns per game. The reason people think Watson could be the real-deal is because that's really one of the only sample size we have on him, whereas most "know what they are getting" with Bortles. Is that fair, though, considering he was a top-10 quarterback twice? Bottom line is that Bortles has been really streaky and has shown more bad than good, but the hate on him has gone a bit too far this offseason. With him rushing for at least 310 yards in every season, it's possible that we see him finish inside the top-15 this year, though you don't want to pay for those up-and-downs in his performances. If I'm being honest, I tempered expectations when doing Trubisky's projections, which made me think I'd be lower than the consensus. It's clear that not enough people have taken notice to the effect that a young offensive-minded head coach can do for a quarterback. Trubisky has been surrounded by a ton of weapons and has extremely underrated mobility, something that fantasy footballers should covet.
Staff Rankings
QB List
One of the most frustrating and inconsistent quarterbacks around, Bortles had yet another trademark Bortles year last year, with some great highs, some awful lows, and no consistency to be seen. Bortles did have his lowest interception total in a season, which is good, but likely was a result of the Jaguars' efforts to protect him with a good defense and a good running game, and less a result of his actual skill. Losing Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns certainly isn't going to help his offensive prospects, however the team will still likely have a good defense and run game, and Marqise Lee should be a solid-enough top option for him. Still, I wouldn't expect much more from Bortles than what you've seen in the past-an inconsistent quarterback who will likely have four to six games where he's excellent, you just won't have any idea which games those will be.It's hard to tell how much of Trubisky's season last year was a result of his talent and how much was a result of a conservative Bears offense. As the season went on, the Bears' offense got a little less conservative and Trubisky was able to flash some of his talent, though he wasn't devoid of problems (most notably his awful Week 15 performance against the Detroit Lions), as he posted a -16.8% DVOA. Trubisky certainly had some accuracy issues, often throwing above receivers more than he should, and he struggled a fair bit under pressure, posting a 48.7 QB rating in those situations-but that's somewhat to be expected from a rookie. There are some reasons to be optimistic about Trubisky coming into this season-first off, the Bears have a new head coach in Matt Nagy who's spent his entire career working under Andy Reid, including as offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs last year. He's also gained some talent in the offensive game, with the addition of Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel. Plus, he'll likely have a healthy offensive line that's actually fairly talented (especially if Cody Whitehair bounces back from his slump last year). Trubisky could definitely take a noticeable step forward this year, but it's hard to count on him too much. There's definitely upside here though.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
Bortles was better than expected in the second half of last year but how long will the optimism last?I actually love Trubisky's upside with Nagy taking over the offense. Allen Robinson also gives him a legit threat. A big 2nd year leap could be on the horizon, but I won't be drafting him
Raju Byfield
Win My Fantasy League
Upgraded receiving options should make him fantasy relevant as a QB2
Jody Smith
FantasyPros
Perennially underrated due to his rushing prowess, I think the Jags are likely to explore QB as early as the first round. Matt Nagy plans to install a complex, aggressive offense that makes Trubisky a potential bargain if the offense ends up being a success.
