NFL Mock
My Patrick Mahomes projection will not be well received by the people. Bottom line is you have a bad defense and stacked weapons to throw to, numbers will come. @amicsta Amictsa has him projected as the RB5, I can't draft him as a QB1, but I wouldn't hesitate to draft him as a QB2.Weeks 12-17 Bortles was the QB2 in fantasy points scored
Bobby Sylvester
FantasyPros
There is plenty of hype surrounding Mahomes after one big game. Let's not forget Matt Flynn, though, who was similar before busting. Yes, he has weapons to throw to and a huge arm, but there are also plenty of question marks that leave Mahomes as a major risk too.You may want to give up on Bortles, but he has now been a QB1 three consecutive seasons and managed to be the #2 QB over the final five weeks of the season. It is never pretty, but he gets the job done from a production perspective. He is a reliable option in two-QB leagues.
Chet Gresham
WalterFootball
Mahomes is boom or bust, but I like his chances to boom in this Kansas City offense. His ability to throw deep will set up Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins well, while Kareem Hunt and Travis Kelce will see work underneath. It also looks like the Chiefs will again be weak on defense, which will push the offense to need to score more through the air.Bortles can have good fantasy days, but he won't be asked to do that much with the defense and running game being the strengths of this offense. His running ability and the fact that he's quarterbacking a winning team means he should be more consistent than his worst games seem to foretell.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
Despite starting just one NFL game in Week 17, there are some who are willing to invest a top-12 quarterback pick on Mahomes. Don't count me as one of them, though. Sure, he's got a cannon for an arm, but so did Jay Cutler. He's got some mobility, but when you have Kareem Hunt, plays aren't going to be designed for him to rush for 50 yards per game. Bottom line, there's massive potential here, but he's essentially a rookie. At the quarterback position, there's no reason you need to take unnecessary risks when there are so many safe options. If Mahomes falls out of the top-15, that's when you should start considering him. While many spend a fortune to acquire Deshaun Watson, many are overlooking the fact that Bortles had "almost" as good of a stretch that Watson did. From Week 13-16 (four games), Bortles threw for 321.3 yards and 2.3 touchdowns per game. During Watson's five-game stretch, he averaged 294.4 yards and 3.6 touchdowns per game. The reason people think Watson could be the real-deal is because that's really one of the only sample size we have on him, whereas most "know what they are getting" with Bortles. Is that fair, though, considering he was a top-10 quarterback twice? Bottom line is that Bortles has been really streaky and has shown more bad than good, but the hate on him has gone a bit too far this offseason. With him rushing for at least 310 yards in every season, it's possible that we see him finish inside the top-15 this year, though you don't want to pay for those up-and-downs in his performances.
Andrew Gould
FantasyPros
After warning against Jimmy Garoppolo's small sample size, it'd be hypocritical to go all in on Mahomes because of an impressive Week 17 showing (22-of-35, 284 passing yards) at Denver. Yet the strong-armed sophomore inherits an offense with Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and Sammy Watkins. He has the talent and supporting cast to become this year's Wentz, but he's also unproven and facing a schedule deemed the league's toughest for a QB by FantasyPros. A big preseason could also persuade prospective buyers to overlook strong alternatives (including his Kansas City predecessor) and lunge a round or two too early for the boom-or-bust gamble. The quintessential "better in fantasy than real life" player, Bortles has notched QB4, 9, and 13 finishes over the past three seasons. He even swung some leagues for managers bold enough to throw their Molotov cocktails in the air and shout "Bortles!" before tossing him into the starting lineup. Only Todd Gurley recorded more fantasy points from Weeks 12 to 16, so there's a solid chance he out-earns his draft price. On the other hand, he's not that great at actual football, and the Jaguars will gladly relegate him to a gatekeeper role when the game allows it. They shouldn't throw enough to drag him back into the top-10 tier.
Staff Rankings
QB List
Mahomes gets the benefit of being the starting quarterback in an Andy Reid offense, and he's not likely to be challenged for the job at all (I mean, are they going to start Chad Henne?). Mahomes will have plenty of weapons in Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and now Sammy Watkins, all of whom are major deep threats as well. In the past two season, no tight end has more deep receptions than Kelce, and Watkins averaged 14.4 air yards per target last year (good for 16th in the league). Mahomes has a great arm and should be able to take advantage of his weapons, the question will just be how polished will he look. He's got potential, he's in the right situation, and he makes for a really interesting sleeper candidate. One of the most frustrating and inconsistent quarterbacks around, Bortles had yet another trademark Bortles year last year, with some great highs, some awful lows, and no consistency to be seen. Bortles did have his lowest interception total in a season, which is good, but likely was a result of the Jaguars' efforts to protect him with a good defense and a good running game, and less a result of his actual skill. Losing Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns certainly isn't going to help his offensive prospects, however the team will still likely have a good defense and run game, and Marqise Lee should be a solid-enough top option for him. Still, I wouldn't expect much more from Bortles than what you've seen in the past-an inconsistent quarterback who will likely have four to six games where he's excellent, you just won't have any idea which games those will be.

Fantasy Football Maniax
Mahomes has an excellent chance to be a QB2 this year with weapons that include RB Kareem Hunt, WR Tyreek Hill and TE Travis Kelce.
Kevin Roberts
Breaking Football
The upside is there with an athletic Mahomes who has a flat out cannon. Weapons are also there but we know nothing about this guy at the NFL level. Late round sleeper, but can't tie my season to himBortles was better than expected in the second half of last year but how long will the optimism last?
Rich Piazza
Fantasy Shed
We know he's the starter, but we have seen so little of him in the NFL. I love his talent and potential just as much as the next, but the pre-training camp craze surrounding him is just a bit much right now.
Jody Smith
FantasyPros
Mahomes is the first QB off the board that comes with considerable risk. His huge arm, running ability, and this offense make Mahomes an intriguing QB2, but he's also a bit of an unknown commodity that could struggle if opposing defenses are able to find a weakness. An ideal QB2, but risky starter. Perennially underrated due to his rushing prowess, I think the Jags are likely to explore QB as early as the first round.
