Hail to Fantasy Football
IF Watson is the QB for this team, Cooks will be one of the biggest values in drafts this year.
Kyle Yates
FantasyPros
Did you know that Samuel had an ADOT of 2.2 yards last season? Additionally, Samuel had 401 yards after the catch in 2020, but finished with only 391 receiving yards. As far as YAC monsters in the NFL, Samuel has to be up at the top of the list based on what he can do with the ball in his hands. This makes him an incredibly exciting player to roster in fantasy football, but also one that has a very unpredictable and unreliable path to relevancy. In order for Samuel to return weekly value, he has to post unheard of efficiency in terms of yards after the catch. With his role in this offense revolving around being given the ball at or behind the line of scrimmage, if he doesn't break metrics in this category, he's not going to be someone that you can count on for fantasy purposes. He's one of the best to do it, so it's likely that he continues to post insane numbers, but it's not something that I'm willing to bet on as a cornerstone of my fantasy roster. As a FLEX option, I can live with the risks, but as anything more than that it's a tough pill to swallow.Cooks has been the definition of productive over the course of his career. However, if Watson does not play in 2021, Cooks becomes a must-avoid option for me. This Texans team is essentially going to be guaranteed the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft at the start of Week 1 and the scoring opportunities for this offense are not exactly going to be abundant. Cooks might give you a safe floor each week, but there's virtually no upside to drafting the veteran receiver. Around his ADP, there are some other options that I'd prefer pulling the trigger on that have more upside.
Mike Tagliere
FantasyPros
Something tells me that Samuel is going to become the Jarvis Landry of the 2020's. What do I mean by that? Well, he's probably going to finish better than where I have him ranked at the end of the season, but just because he finishes as the WR24 (hypothetically), it doesn't necessarily mean he's the 24th best receiver to roster. Through 22 career games, Samuel has never hit the "boom" mark of 25 PPR points. On top of that, there are suddenly a lot of mouths to feed in the 49ers pass attack. He's a solid player with a decent floor, but he won't be the reason you win a fantasy championship. You can take him as a stable WR3, or shoot for someone with a higher ceiling/lower floor.Over the last six years, there have been just seven wide receivers who've finished top-24 in at least five of them. Those receivers are Mike Evans, Julio Jones, Davante Adams, DeAndre Hopkins, Amari Cooper, Jarvis Landry, and... Cooks. He's done it with four different quarterbacks, too. However, 2021 might be his toughest test yet, as it appears Tyrod Taylor will be his quarterback, and this is projected to be the lowest scoring offense in the league. Still, he's the clear-cut top option on this team and should be a lock to see 100-plus targets as long as he's healthy.
Dan Harris
FantasyPros
Samuel's average depth of target of 2.2 yards wasn't just the lowest among wide receivers, it was so comically low that it's difficult to believe it's not a typo. To be fair, it's hard to criticize anything Samuel did last year, given that he was limited to seven games because of a Jones fracture in his foot and a hamstring injury. But still, the fact that he was targeted closer to the line than most running backs isn't a great sign for his long-term value. Worse still is that between George Kittle's dominance, Brandon Aiyuk's emergence, and a quarterback position in flux, it's difficult to see a scenario where Samuel turns into a safe fantasy option. There will be weeks where Samuel will probably be worth starting, but if you draft him as anything but a bench option then you're taking unnecessary risk.
Mark Ringo
Sleepers and Busts
Samuel is probably the third option on a team that might not pass it as much as fantasy owners would like. Kittle is #1, and Aiyuk is #2. Unless you think Jimmy Garoppolo or Trey Lance are passing for 4,000 yards and 35 TDs (I don't). It's hard to see Samuel's having much upside.Cooks quietly had a solid year despite all of the turmoil in Houston. Deshaun Watson's pending departure hurts this offense and his numbers. Tyrod Taylor comes in to man the ship for at least a little while. The game script will force the Texans to pass in the 4th Qtr, opening up plenty of garbage catches and yards. Cooks can pad his stats and, in the process, get owners sneaky fantasy points.
Joe Pisapia
FantasyPros
Brandin Cooks has quietly had a very strong NFL career. The 2021 outlook is very fuzzy with chaos falling upon the Texans. If Deshaun Watson plays QB, Cooks could be a serviceable WR3. With Tyrod Taylor at QB, Cooks is a WR4 at best and that seems the more likely scenario. If he drops in drafts considerably he may be a sneaky good addition to a roster. However, it's going to be a long, difficult season in Houston.
Wolf of Roto Street
Roto Street Journal
Consistently undervalued, but tough to take a plunge on with so much QB uncertainty right now
